FOLLOWING several letters in the Bolton Evening News last year, which met with limited success, may I appeal again to anyone who knew, or knew of, Bolton-born author Allen Clarke.
In his Windmill Land stories, he met numerous Bolton people, most of whom featured in his many books and newspaper articles. Shirley Matthews (formerly Currie) and I have been working for some time on the biography of Allen, her grandfather, and I'm happy to say that completion is within sight.
We would very much like to hear from anyone with tales and anecdotes of old Bolton, especially the Parrott Street area and Hulton School, which he attended.
We would particularly like to hear from the grandson of the "pedalling photographer". He contacted us once, but unfortunately his number was mislaid. Many of your older readers will have had parents, or grandparents, with stories to tell. Hopefully, some will be about Allen.
While the evenings are still dark, why not sit round your fire and reminisce?
Better still, why not tell your grandchildren. You might be pleasantly surprised at their reaction.
