Wanderers 1, Tranmere Rovers 2 (aet 1-1): IAIN Hume, the pocket battleship of the Tranmere attack, blew Wanderers' FA cup hopes out of the water with a stunning extra-time strike in a Reebok third round replay that took more than 80 minutes to come to life in front of a crowd of just 8,759 writes Gordon Sharrock

The Rovers striker fired an unstoppable left footer past veteran keeper Kevin Poole in the first minute of extra time after Ricky Shakes had grabbed an injury-time lifeline for Wanderers.

The game was in its second minute of overtime when Shakes, the 18-year-old Londoner making his senior debut as a late substitute, fired in the rebound after a Per Frandsen shot had been blocked on the line.

Tranmere thought they were home and dry and heading for a fourth round tie at Luton when Ivory Coast striker Eugene Dadi broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute.

But under-strength Wanderers, who had been generally disappointing, took the tie the full distance, plus the extra 30 minutes.

It was a match that possibly signalled the end of Mario Jardel's Reebok adventure.

The Brazilian striker, who was signed in a headline-grabbing transfer from Sporting Lisbon in August, looks like he is on his way out at the Reebok after Sm Allardyce confirmed he would listen to offers.

The Wanderers boss at least gave him a chance to shine against Second Division opposition but the two-time winner of the Golden Boot as Europe's top scorer simply failed to deliver and was replaced at half-time by Kevin Nolan, whose late goal at Prenton Park saved Wanderers blushes and took the tie to a replay.

Allardyce shamelessly selected a weakened side for a competition he ranks third behind the Premiership and Carling Cup in his list of priorities and it showed as Wanderers struggled to create much in the way of scoring chances in front of a sparse crowd that would have been even lower but for Tranmere bringing a large and vociferous following.

Henrik Pedersen squandered one early chance, had one powerful shot blocked and hit the post from a free kick just before the interval.

PRE-MATCH TEAM NEWS

Sam Allardyce had made no bones about his priorities in the build up to this FA Cup replay and confirmed his indifference towards the competition by making 10 changes to the side that started Saturday's Premiership derby at Blackburn,

Only Per Frandsen survived from the first 11 at Ewood Park but he lasted only half an hour of the derby action before being substituted in the tactical switch that gave Wanderers a better balance in midfield.

Allardyce still turned out some big names with Brazilian striker Mario Jardel starting his first game since being told Wanderers were prepared to listen to offers for him while Stelios and Henrik Pedersen, who both figured in the dramatic win at Blackburn, were given starting places.

Danny Livesey and Charlie Comyn-Platt, who played in defence in the original tie at Tranmere, were given another chance to impress while Ricardo Vaz Te, the 17-year-old Portuguese striker who numbers Jardel among his sporting heroes, was given his first start in senior football after looking good as substitute in the 1-1 draw at Prenton Park.

Tranmere were without Simon Haworth, who got the goal in an impressive performance 10 days ago. He broke his leg in the 2-2 draw at Brentford on Saturday and his place in attack went to Eugene Dadi.

Iain Hume and Ian Sharps passed fitness tests and made the starting line-up.

Tranmere: Achterberg, Taylor, Sharps, Allen, Harrison, Roberts, Jones, Mellon, Hume, Dadi, Beresford. Subs: Connelly, Howarth, Navarro, Hay, Linwood.
