FIREFIGHTERS launched an unusual rescue early on Saturday when a deaf and blind dog became trapped in a drainpipe.
Fire crews were called to Halliwell Reform Club in Kenton Close, Halliwell, at 12.55am after reports from the dog's owner that it had got stuck in a drainpipe after falling off a flat roof.
The terrier-sized dog had become wedged two-thirds of the way down the pipe on the one-storey building.
The owner found the dog but called the fire service when he realised it would be difficult to free the animal. Firefighters used cutting equipment to remove a section of the pipe before taking the dog out.
Leading Fireman Ian Tattersall said: "The dog was about 17 or 18 years old and was deaf and blind. That probably helped with the rescue because it couldn't hear us cutting the pipe."
"The dog was quite placid when we brought him out and reunited him with his owner."
