THE Freight Transport Association has published guidance on the misuse of alcohol and drugs on the road.
The 16-page guide for transport managers and an A5 drivers' card highlights the effects of drink and drugs on the performance of both driving and non-mobile staff as well as the implications for business.
The publications also dispel commonly held myths surrounding over the counter medicines. The FTA's Rachel Hare, said: "Incidents of drink-driving amongst professional drivers are few and far between.
"However the industry cannot afford to rest on its laurels. There are many misconceptions regarding drink and drugs that may leave drivers and employers liable.
"For instance, it is not okay to just have one drink; over the counter medicines can affect your ability to drive and having a drink the night before can affect your ability to drive -- and you cannot sleep it off in your lorry cab.
"These new publications will help set the record straight and will enable companies to make sure their staff remain safe and that their business is legally compliant."
