From the Evening News, January 16, 1904: WHILST in Manchester Road, Great Lever, near to Lord Bradford's pits, shortly after 11 o'clock on Friday night,

Frederick Horner, aged 29, 10 Egerton Street, a carter in the employ of Mr Entwistle, carrier, met with a serious accident. He was getting off the lorry to put on the brake when he fell, the wheels of the vehicle passing over his right leg and causing a compound fracture below the knee. The Fire Station ambulance, summoned by means of the Manchester Road fire alarm, removed the man to the Infirmary.

From the Evening News, January 16, 1954: MR Roy Shipperbottam, President of the Bolton Golf Association, has been appointed to the executive of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs. This is a well-deserved honour for Mr Shipperbottam has a long record of hard work for golf in the district and has an even longer record of successful competition play. He was champion of Bolton in 1925 and has appeared in the final stages on several other occasions. Mr Shipperbottam was also a well-known footballer, having played for England as an amateur and for Bolton Wanderers.

From the Evening News, January 16, 1979: A long-established Bolton town centre business -- Miss Kenyon's Gown Shop -- is moving out to Horwich. A notice displayed in the window reads: "Moving to Horwich, where parking is easy." This was one of the points made at last night's Bolton Chamber of Trade Executive Committee meeting during a long discussion on Bolton parking problems. The Chamber has written to Bolton's Director of Engineering requesting free parking throughout the town centre.

BRITAIN'S railway system was paralysed today as thousands of train drivers staged the first of their 24-hour strikes. An 11th hour intervention last night by Transport Secretary William Rodgers came too late to avert the stoppage and millions of people struggled to work through traffic jams as they tried to get in by car and bus.

From the Evening News, January 15, 1994: NEIL Diamond lookalike Gary Ryan is to take part in a national tour billed as "the Great Legends of Rock." Gary, aged 27, from Halliwell, found fame for his superstar impression on the TV show Stars In Their Eyes. He has now been signed up for a 20-date national concert tour with other lookalikes impersonating Elton John, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Freddie Mercury and Roy Orbison.

HISTORIC gateposts and railings are to be saved after a former school building is demolished. Bolton Council's planning chiefs are keen to make sure they are not lost when a new development is built on the Folds Road school site.
