From the Evening News, January 19, 1904: Messrs Taylor Bros, cotton spinners, of Wallgate, Wigan, were summoned for a breach of the Factory and Workshops Act.

They allowed Herbert Morley (12) to clean machinery which was in motion. Mr Tinker prosecuted and alleged that Morley, who was a half-timer, was cleaning machinery which was in motion when he slightly injured his finger. Mr Appleton, who defended, said the management only heard of what the boy had done a fortnight after the accident occured. A fine of 10 shillings and costs was imposed.

THREE young elephants engaged to perform at a Woolwich theatre have caused a lively scene. They were being driven through the streets when, seeing themselves reflected in the large plate-glass window of a photographer's shop, they charged the premises. One of them forced the glass door, entered the window and emerged into the street bleeding from the head.

From the Evening News, January 19, 1954: FIFTY years ago yesterday Mr W. Carlton Rothwell opened the doors of Bolton's branch of the Provincial Insurance Company. He was then office boy, but for the past 35 years has been local manager. At a Blundell Arms luncheon given by friends and colleagues yesterday he remembered the first time he and another boy worked their first "overtime" night. He said: "We worked well into the night - killing the mice which were eating our ledgers."

Mr T. W. Hubberstey, President of Bolton and District Grocers' and Provision Dealers' Association, complained at a meeting about a scheme by which a soap powder firm was distributing a free sample to every householder in Bolton. It was, he claimed, "playing dirty" with the grocers of the town - their trade was thus being jeopardised.

From the Evening News, January 19, 1979: MANY Bolton Council buildings and services will be affected by the national day of action planned by local government manual workers on Monday, January 22. As previously announced, all schools in the borough will be closed for the day. Some schools are still closed as a result of the recent fuel emergency.

From the Evening News, January 19, 1994: GRIM rumours circulating at the British Aerospace Defence Dynamics factory at Lostock were confirmed this morning. The site is to bear the main brunt of 510 job losses throughout the division - a reduction of 330 people to 910. Shocked employees, who have achieved improved levels of efficiency and expertise under new Japanese-style production methods, greeted the news with anger.

CABBIE David Hales, aged 31, of Priory Place, Tonge Moor, Bolton completed 12 hours of non-stop ten-pin bowling at the GX Superbowl in Worsley. He raised hundreds of pounds for the Bolton Taxi Drivers' Children's Outing Fund.
