TWO local cricket clubs have announced their professionals for the forthcoming 2004 season.
Ramsbottom of the Lancashire League have signed an Australian in Victoria's Andrew McDonald while Manchester Association Bury have looked nearer home in appointing Nick Kennedy.
Twenty-two year old McDonald, a right hand bat and right arm fast medium pace bowler, has been recommended to the Acre Bottom club by former Rams' professionals Brad Hodge, Ian Harvey and Jason Arnberger.
He was all set to sign for Ramsbottom's Valley rivals Haslingden last season but a deal fell through when it turned out he hadn't played enough State games to qualify for a work permit.
However, there's no problem for McDonald this time around as he is now a regular with Victoria.
He boasts a record of 214 runs from ten first class matches with four not outs for an average of 17.8 runs.
His highest score was an unbeaten 45.
With the ball he picked up 45 maidens from 178 overs, taking 23 wickets for 521 runs. An average of 22.65.
"We have agreed terms with Andrew and are looking forward to having him here," said Rams' team manager Mike Everett.
"He is a big friend of Brad Hodge's and is keen to come to the club."
The decision to swoop for McDonald came after talks to bring back popular New Zealand international Chris Harris fell through.
Meanwhile it's a return to his former club for Kennedy after several successful seasons playing for Radcliffe.
He is a more than useful batsman as well as being one of last season's top amateur wicket takers in the Central Lancashire League.
The Sports Club side are hoping to build on last season's effort when a late revival saw them keep their place in the Manchester Association Premier Division.
Preparations for the new season starts on the Thursday, January 22 with nets at Old Trafford commencing at 9pm.
All current players are invited to attend while newcomers are also welcome and should contact new first team captain Mike Brawn on 01706 642395.
All members are invited to a fundraising race night at the club on Friday, January 23 at 8pm.
