BLACKROD councillors are stepping up their campaign for traffic safety measures at an accident blackspot.

The councillors have been fighting for 30 years to have some form of safety measure installed at the junction of the A6 Blackrod by-pass and Manchester Road.

Following yet another collision at the dangerous junction last week, in which a woman suffered serious leg injuries, councillors are calling for Bolton Council to tackle the problem.

Blackrod town councillor Pat Barrow said: "Bolton has £8 million to spend on this sort of scheme. We have been waiting long enough, surely it's our turn for some funding. We have been told that there haven't been any fatalities there, so there is no urgency.

"But it is ridiculous that it should take someone to be killed before anything is done."

Previous attempts to ease problems at the busy junction involved the introduction of two bollards, but councillors have spent the last five years asking for one of them to be removed, claiming it obstructs drivers' vision.

Mrs Barrow said: "I use that junction everyday and there are a silly number of accidents -- not all major, but they could be prevented by putting in either a roundabout or traffic lights."

Blackrod town clerk has written to the council asking for financial help to solve the problem before somebody is killed.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: "Engineers are looking at options for improving this junction, which has a poor safety record.

"Traffic signals are among the options which could be considered. This and proposals for other junctions will be presented to development and transport policy development group in March for consideration prior to executive members approving the highways programmes for 2004-5."
