I AM writing in response to Karen Francis' letter, "Confused by this sort of advice on compost".
Karen Francis was quite right. Part of the advice quoted in the Bolton Evening News article, "Wombles of Bolton recycle clutter", was indeed incorrect. The advice stated that "used tea bags, left-over turkey and vegetable peelings could be put in the Green Bin for composting".
Certainly if someone composts waste at home using their own compost bin, then indeed both garden and kitchen waste can go into it to make excellent compost.
However, Bolton residents taking part in the council's 'Green Bin' scheme can, at the moment, only use it to compost garden waste because the current regulations do not allow the council to compost kitchen waste within our current process.
It is generally best never to compost fish, meat or poultry as they can attract flies and vermin.
Composting is easy and is good for the environment and I would like to take this opportunity of encouraging everyone to have a go.
