THE scheme in which Lancashire County Council is to spend £40,000 on a footway/cycle path conversion, has to be applauded, as it is part of the West Chorley Cycling Route scheme.
Linking the cycle routes of Gillibrand link road, Euxton and Astley makes these routes safer and hence encourages people to cycle.
It is a shame the Chorley Borough Council scheme proposed for Clayton Brook/Great Greens (which forms part of my ward), does not follow the same high standards of consultation. The present design is unacceptable because the cyclist becomes a second-class citizen in the belief that you are protecting them.
The design has the cyclist giving way, which is against the principles laid out in DETR "Traffic Advisory Leaflet 1/97".
As a result of my concerns and those raised by the "Right to Ride Network", a safety audit has recently been carried out within the closed doors confines of Chorley Borough Council (indeed, neither I, nor a spokesperson from the Right to Ride Network was invited).
As yet, no information has been published.
Conservative councillor Roger Livesey, Clayton-le-Woods North Ward.
