A CIVIC leader spent the day with Bolton firefighters to gain an insight into how fire stations are run on a day-to-day basis.
Bradshaw councillor Paul Brierley sits on the Greater Manchester Fire Authority, where he has the task of ensuring that the fire service provides good value for money.
He decided to observe a typical day at Bolton Central Fire Station so that when it comes to making committee decisions, he is armed with knowledge about how exactly stations are run.
He said: "I sit on the Greater Manchester Fire Authority which deals with implementing legislation, co-ordinating policies and making sure the service provides the best value for money.
"I wanted to get the full picture of what happens as soon as a 999 call is made, so I can give my honest opinion about issues."
Cllr Brierley observed shift changes at Bolton Central Fire Station, watched how firefighters check appliances, saw drill sessions and experienced what a regular day is like for firefighters.
The councillor also visited the West Command call centre where 999 calls are logged, to see how operators deal with emergencies.
Even after returning home, he remained on call until midnight to join firefighters dealing with major incidents.
Cllr Brierley said: "I am interested in what the fire crews are doing, and not just in my capacity as an administrator. Councillors do care about the crews and the staff and this was an ideal opportunity to find out how things are managed."
