IT is surprising to note from the volume of letters following Cllr Harkin's suggestion to change Bolton's name, that there are still many people who mistakenly think that Greater Manchester is part of Bolton addresses.
Bolton is not, and never has been, part of Greater Manchester, for geographical and postal purposes.
Greater Manchester was solely an administrative county which ceased to exist some years ago. The fact that Bolton is still being referred to as Greater Manchester is caused by TV and press reporters who are probably too young to know any better.
All the towns around Manchester which are outside the city boundary are in Lancashire or Cheshire. Incidentally, since the introduction of postcodes, it has not been necessary to include the county in any address.
The only time you need to include the county is on the rare occasions when you do not know the postcode.
With so many people being out of date regarding their address, it is not surprising that Bolton still has a cloth cap image and is so backward looking.
Proud Mancunian happy to live in Bolton, Lancashire.
