From the Evening News, January 26, 1904: THE minders employed at the Victoria Mill (Wingates) branch of the Haslam and Great Lever Spinning Company held their annual party on Saturday at the Albion Hotel.

"Success to the firm," proposed by Mr J. Horrocks, was heartily drunk and songs were rendered by Messrs Holt, Horrocks, Frangleton and Billington, these being interspersed with readings by Mr Calderbank and a recitation from Mr Stanley Greaves.

From the Evening News, January 26, 1954: BOLTON area artists are well-represented in the 95th exhibition of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. One of the local painters involved is Mr J.R. Gauld of Bromwich Street, Bolton - the President of the Academy. The others are Brian Bradshaw, G. Entwistle, Marion Rhodes, E. W. Wiard, Bob Crossley, Louie Brookes, T.B. Pitfield, Stella Platt, Roger Hampson, J.C. P. Malpas and H. Riding.

CONSIDERABLE surprise will be caused by the announcement that no fewer than five members of Tonge CC's senior team of last season have promised to turn out for the Farnworth Social Circle in the Bolton Cricket Association fixtures next summer. They are Arthur Crook, Syd Jones, Frank Tattersall, Harry Crossley and Brian Conroy.

From the Evening News, January 26, 1979: MISERY returned to Bolton roads today as motorists crawled to work in some of the worst snow and ice conditions for nearly 40 years. Angry drivers again criticised Bolton Corporation, claiming the town's roads were the worst in the area. But a Bolton Council spokesman said crews had worked throughout the night on main roads and bus routes.

BRENDA and Keith Hope of Maple Crescent, Farnworth celebrated the birth of daughter Georgie Ellen into a family which usually produced boys. She was the first girl to be born with the Hope family name since before 1873.

From the Evening News, January 26, 1994: PLUCKY Maura Jackson has proved she is a mum in a million by winning the national Working Mother of the Year award. The 23-year-old single mum, of Queens Road, Deane, won prizes including £1,000 in cash and an expenses paid trip to London. Maura gave birth to daughter Leah when she was 19.

THE next Mayor of Bolton will be Cllr Tom Anderton, aged 69, of Willows Lane, Bolton. Cllr Anderton, a Labour representative in Daubhill, was elected to Bolton Council in 1979 - the day Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister.
