PLANESPOTTERS at Manchester Airport are being urged to help in the war on terrorism.
Greater Manchester Police are putting up posters bearing the slogan Vigilance Saves Lives and handing out cards reminding plane enthusiasts, together with taxi drivers and airport workers, to remain on their guard.
Plane spotters, who gather at the site on a daily basis, are being asked to alert police if they see any suspicious behaviour.
A police spokesman said: "Large communities of aviation enthusiasts flock to Manchester Airport on a daily basis and police believe they are essentially the eyes and ears of the airport.
"Airport staff, drivers and aviation enthusiasts are being asked to remain alert to the possibility of terrorist threats and help by reporting any unusual activity or unfamiliar faces to the police."
"I cannot underestimate how important a role members of the public can play in helping to counter both terrorism and other crimes."
He added: "The basic message is, if it looks suspicious, report it."
Police said they had no information about a specific terrorist threat against the airport.
The scheme was part of a general effort to increase security.
