A 40-year-old man was found collapsed in the middle of a road in Breightmet in the early hours.
Paramedics were called to Blair Lane shortly before 2am after receiving a report of a man lying on the road. He had suffered a serious head injury and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital.
Police believe the man may have fallen over as he walked along the road, part of which is still closed off this morning and diversions were in place as the scene was examined.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "The man's injuries are not believed to be life threatening."
