BILL Brierley seems to think I have suddenly become anti-traffic calming. He is totally wrong!

In my recent letter I suggested a rethink on speed humps on roads where speed humps have become a problem. On bus routes, for example, where passengers, particularly the elderly and the infirm, have great difficulty alighting when the bus bounces over the humps. On roads, too, where residents suffer, due to the added noise and pollution caused by humps. Instead of humps on these roads, I suggested speed cameras.

Bill seems to think it is because I am a driver that I am anti-hump. He tells me to get out of my car and try walking, to see for myself why the most terrorised people on earth are pedestrians.

Well, Bill, I still have my driving licence, but it is quite a few years since we had a car. I love to walk and do so every day, weather permitting.

I've seen drivers on a daily basis completely ignoring the 20mph speed limits in residential areas. These are the very experienced ones who do not need to be told how fast to drive, because they know best! Probably the same ones who want speed cameras removed from inappropriate places, and want those that must be kept painted brightly so they can see them and slow down as they approach.

No point telling bad drivers to learn to drive safely, Bill. These people are so arrogant, they actually believe it is time for them to break the law because they know best. These are the ones who really do believe they are good drivers. Statistics prove otherwise!

We often hear drivers say the police should concentrate on catching criminals, not speeding motorists. In my book, speeding motorists, even those doing 25mph in a 20mph zone, are criminals. They kill and run!
