A POPULAR headteacher is retiring this summer after working in schools across Bolton for more than 30 years.

After nine years at the helm of Blackrod Church Primary School, Pauline Richardson is planning to travel, and spend more time indulging her hobbies of fell walking, gardening and cooking.

But Mrs Richardson said: "I love teaching - I think it's just the variety. No two days are ever the same, and you meet so many different people."

Bolton-born Mrs Richardson attended Smithills School before training in Hertfordshire.

She began her career at the now closed St George's Primary in Bolton, where she stayed for three years before going on to Ladybridge for a 12-year stint.

Her next school was Cherry Tree Primary, Farnworth.

In 1990, Mrs Richardson was appointed deputy head at Red Lane Primary, and in 1995 she became headteacher at Blackrod Church.

She has noticed how the teaching profession has changed during her career.

She said: "There is a lot less autonomy these days. The curriculum is far more controlled and there is a lot more paperwork and accountability."

She feels she has helped Blackrod Church Primary School to maintain its happy environment, and has introduced outside activities for children and increased classroom support.
