NOISE pollution from a town centre pub could force the owners to pull the plug on their evening entertainment.

Time Square in Union Street has applied to Chorley Borough Council for a renewal of its public entertainment licence, first granted in July, 2003.

But a string of complaints from a neighbour were handed to the council's Environmental Health Department which has subsequently objected to a renewal of the temporary licence.

The case was due to be put to the licensing and safety committee at a town hall meeting today (Wednesday, July 7), but has now been deferred to allow both sides to seek legal representation.

A neighbour listed more than 100 disturbances between February and June this year and environmental health officers were called out repeatedly.

The alleged incidents include three nights where loud music was played until after 2am and customers dancing in the streets after closing time. Police officers were called out several times to the newly-refurbished bar, owned by the Pub Estate Company, based in Foxhole Road, Chorley,

In a report to councillors, Rosemary Lyon, director of legal services, said noise-limiting devices were "tampered with, over-ridden or awaiting repair".

The pub offers punters a large TV screen, live DJs and a quiz night -- all of which could be under threat if the licence is not renewed.

The Pub Estate Company refused to comment.
