A YOUNG man who died from cancer two years ago will be remembered when his friends take to the football field.

Peter Catterall, from Darwen Road, Bromley Cross, died from Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 22.

He had spent four years being treated at the Christie Hospital's teenage and then adult leukaemia unit.

The Peter Catterall Memorial Tournament started three years ago with Peter, a former Turton High School pupil, kicking off the fund raising.

Mum Susan said: "Peter was determined to do what he could to help improve the quality of life of people attending Christie's and, together with his friends, managed to raise more than £3,200.

"Peter's friends decided the best way to honour his memory would be to carry on fund raising, and the total now is £9,000."

The memorial tournament will be held at 2pm on Saturday, August 8, at Eagley Sports Club. The Spread Eagle Lads will take on Spread Eagle FC.

Following the tournament there will be a bad taste fancy dress party at the Spread Eagle pub, Hough Lane, where "style policemen" will be handing out forfeits to anyone who dares to dress in normal clothes.

There will also be a yard of ale competition, a grand raffle and a sporting memorabilia auction.

A signed Bolton Wanderers shirt and football will be auctioned, along with a signed photograph of Alex Ferguson. An actual Manchester United match ball and a week's holiday to Marbella will also go under the hammer.

The money raised will go towards buying a pager system so patients can go home after treatment and be paged back into hospital is necessary.

A colour television, DVD player, microwave, digital radio and mountain bike will be among the raffle prizes.

Mrs Catterall said: "Although the event will be tinged with a great deal of sadness, we hope to have a lot of fun raising money in a way we know Peter would have been proud of."
