I WISH to correct misleading statements in your "Insult To Fallen Heroes" headline (July 8).

1. The proposed re-siting of Dunscar War Memorial to a new situation not more than 50m away is not to create an access for a new housing development. A quick look at the planning application will show that access to the proposed development does not require any change to the current position of the War Memorial.

2. However, as executor of the late Edna Whitton, of Mather Fold Farm, Egerton, I have agreed to make land immediately adjacent to the War Memorial available so that it can be repositioned. The Memorial would remain in full view at the junction of Darwen and Blackburn Roads. Furthermore it would be completely refurbished so all the names of the fallen would once more become clearly visible. And commemorative services could be held in a larger, safer and more attractive situation.

3. If the re-siting is accepted, as part of the proposed housing development, then the area vacated by the Memorial would be used to reconstruct a very busy junction. The new layout proposed in the planning application is modelled on plans previously devised by Bolton Metro's own engineers as the best way to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety.

4. Many councillors have been aware of these proposals since January 2003.

Repositioning and thoroughly renovating the War Memorial will both enhance the monument's appearance, and significantly improve a dangerous junction. In no way can it be construed as an insult to our fallen heroes; my late mother, who lived all her 90 years in the village, who attended Remembrance Sunday ceremonies without fail, would have been horrified by your sensational headline.
