From the Evening News, July 22, 1904: ON the recommendation of Mr F. Lomax, hon representive for this district, the Royal Humane Society have awarded their highest testimonial.
Inscribed on vellum, to Richard Yates of Bolton for having, at great personal risk, rescued a fellow workman named William Sumner from drowning in a deep pit at Euxton a few days ago. Both men were with a gang of men from the L and Y Permanent Way Department, Breightmet Street, who were repairing the lines and during the dinner hour Sumner went for a swim in the pit, 20 feet deep. He was seized with cramp and Yates, seeing his difficulties, dived in the water. He was seized by Sumner and both men went under several times. Yates, although only a moderate swimmer, bravely held on and getting near the bank, two of the workmen joined hands and by this means the men were assisted to the bank. Sumner was unconscious and artificial respiration was resorted to with success. The testimonial will be signed, amongst others, by the Prince of Wales.
