REFUGEES will be able to make the most of their professional skills and language abilities by volunteering in a new £47,000 project.
The Government hopes the scheme will help to integrate people who have travelled to Bolton from all over the world by placing them in volunteer roles.
The Horizons Project, which will be co-ordinated by Refugee Action in Bolton and Oldham, aims to create links with potential employers.
Many people who have fled their homelands have found themselves unable to work since arriving in Bolton, despite holding professional qualifications. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work, and those with refugee status often face difficulties finding employment.
Sarah Buck, volunteer project support worker for the group in Bolton, said she had met a number of people with experience in much-needed professions, such as doctors, nurses, teachers and computer technicians, who did not want to sit at home.
She said: "Employers are often reluctant to take on people from other countries because they do not know what skills they have or are not sure whether their qualifications are appropriate. Gaining experience working with companies will help people to go on and find jobs.
"The wide range of skills that refugees have brought with them can also benefit the community and volunteer groups."
There are currently around 1,100 asylum seekers in Bolton who could benefit from the scheme, in addition to those who have already had their application approved.
Around 60 people signed up to a similar scheme in Manchester, which was supported by groups such as the British Red Cross and Age Concern.
Volunteers are unpaid, but most organisations reimburse expenses such as meals or travel.
