WE are totally opposed to the proposal to relocate the War Memorial at Dunscar to facilitate the alteration of the road junction and allow the building of 11 dwellings and one apartment block.
To even consider moving the War Memorial is outrageous, as it was placed there in memory of many local men who gave their lives to keep our country free and as such it should be given a great deal of respect and reverence.
Having lived in Egerton for 34 years myself, and my husband for all his life, we feel that the Memorial and the gardens surrounding it are a lovely spot in an ever increasing area of housing and the resultant increase of traffic.
The area of land that the developer wants to build these houses on is one of the only green spaces around this area, with all the development that has gone on in the past and which is proposed in the future. It seems to us that the developer is the only one who has seen these so-called fly-tippers, glue sniffers, drug users and dog walkers.
Surely there are already enough houses in the area without building these extra ones on green belt land and in a conservation area.
The council, in the past, spent a lot of money in this area, firstly by closing the slip road behind the Memorial to traffic, and then later re-opening it because of the development between Darwen Road and Smith Lane, so surely now it should be left as it is. The extra traffic that would be generated by this development would add to already congested roads, which have not been updated since the 1950s despite the massive increase in properties in the area.
While we are totally opposed to this development of this piece of land, which is a haven for wildlife, rabbits, bird life etc, our main cause for concern is the proposal to move the War Memorial, which, at the moment, is a quiet and dignified area where people can show their respect for the men of two world wars who paid the ultimate price for their country. If this is allowed to go ahead, we shudder to think what would be next.
Have some respect for the men whose names are on this Memorial and leave it where it is now.
