From the Evening News, July 23, 1904: TODAY was the last day of the prolonged visit which has been paid to Bolton by Mr Rae, the Blantyre bloodless surgeon and it only mildly expresses the result of his treatment to say that many have derived great benefit.
Indeed, many sufferers regard him as almost supernatural thanks to the good he has done them. With little rest, he has been treating dozens of cases of cripples daily for over three weeks, and after resting in Bolton this weekend he will depart on Monday to some haven which will be unknown to the world at large.
A FULL-blooded Sioux Indian has created a sensation at Bonesteel, South Dakota, by riding through the town with his squaw in a motor car. His tribe have ceased to recognise him.
From the Evening News, July 23, 1954: SIR Thomas Beecham will conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert at the Victoria Hall, Bolton, on Friday, October 22, to mark the diamond jubilee of Bolton Musical Artists' Association. This was announced by the chairman, Miss Anne Broadhurst, at the Association's annual meeting last night.
WHEN members of the newly-formed Bolton and District Joint Sewerage Board inspected eight of its 16 works yesterday some were shocked by the antiquated condition of some of the plant. The over-all scheme of the Board is for a new works at Ringley to serve the whole of the area. It is estimated that it will cost nearly £2,000,000 and cover 58 acres.
From the Evening News, July 23, 1979: SWEEPING public sector cuts were needed for Britain to mount an economic recovery, Employment Secretary James Prior declared today. His tough warning came shortly before the Cabinet was due to go into special session in an effort to reach agreement on some of the most drastic Government economics since the war. The Prime Minister is reported to be trying to push through a swingeing plan for public spending cuts totalling nearly £4,000 million - despite a storm of criticism from Labour MPs and union chiefs.
IRAN'S unofficial head of state, Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini, has declared music the opium of youth and called on broadcasters to eliminate it from the airwaves. He said: "You must turn radio and television into educational institutions and eliminate music."
From the Evening News, July 23, 1994: CORONATION Street heart-throb John St Ryan is set to launch a new career - as a pop star. The former Bolton-based actor - who plays Bet Gilroy's country and western-loving trucker lover Charlie Whelan - is about to release his first single. John, who puts his acting success down to being spotted starring in a play at Bolton's Octagon Theatre, has teamed up with Preston-based Ken Nicol to form "Nicol St Ryan."
A QUARTER of a century ago Prestons of Bolton, the local jewellery firm, sent a silver goblet to the three Americans who took part in the first space mission to put a man on the moon. Prestons, who received a letter of thanks from Neil Armstrong, are now marking the anniversary with a window display showing a replica of the goblet, along with the type of watch worn by astronauts on the mission.
