FEMALE apprentices are making headway in the traditionally male-dominated building industry.

And among those setting the pace are employees of Bolton At Home, the organisation that manages Bolton's council houses.

Janice Evans and Jemma Hicks are now qualified Building Surveyors after achieving 2:1 honours degrees in Building Surveying, having spent more than seven years studying. They began their careers for Bolton Council in administration and their success means they are now working for Bolton At Home. They are hoping to build on their success to achieve chartered status.

Meanwhile, Michelle Glynn and Tracy Myers, technical trainees at Bolton At Home, have just passed their first year in HNC Building Studies, alongisde Christopher Halliwell. Julie Powell, clerical assistant, has qualified in NVQ II Business Administration.

Noel Spencer, chairman of Bolton At Home, said: "We are very proud of the girls' achievements.

"We feel it is important to offer equal opportunities to all our employees so it is especially pleasing to see women achieve so much in a traditionally male-dominated industry."
