CAN we once and for all put a stop to this ridiculous argument surrounding the problems caused by pigeons in Bolton town centre.

As we constantly read in the Bolton Evening News about trying to make Bolton a more attractive place for visitors and shoppers, I am amazed at the number of letters I have read referring to these vermin as loveable creatures.

The truth is that pigeons are disease-carrying pests that this town can do without. It is a well-known medical fact that they carry a range of diseases such as salmonellosis, tuberculosis and ornithosis.

Pigeon droppings, nesting materials and dead carcasses can contain a wide variety of mites and insects. These can then infest areas where people live and cause skin irritations, disease or allergic reactions.

Pigeons are wild birds capable of finding their own food. Human food does not contain the ingredients the birds require for good health, so by feeding them we are doing them no favours.

If we get to grips with the litter problem within our town, and feeding pigeons rightly becomes banned, then surely we are only preserving the health and well-being of the people and visitors of Bolton, as well as the magnificent buildings that form our town centre.
