A SCHOOL has been given more than £1,000 worth of sports equipment from the kind-hearted family of a former pupil.
St George's Primary School, The Hoskers, Westhoughton, will benefit from cricket, football, gym athletics and cheerleading equipment bought by a donation from the family of Colin Hughes.
Mr Hughes, who died last October, aged 70, was the grandfather of pupil Daniel Crompton and a keen sports fan who represented Daisy Hill at cricket.
Money will also be used to establish sports awards at the school, which will honour outstanding achievement by pupils each year.
Mr Hughes' widow Eileen also unveiled new benches for parents to watch sports matches from.
Deputy head James Royal said: "Mr Hughes was a very kind gentleman and a wonderful example of sportsmanship.
"He encouraged our team to play hard and fair and I can think of no better way to celebrate the joy of his life than by helping large numbers of young people to improve their sporting skills."
