A BOLTON primary school has been named as South Lancashire and North West Cheshire's top fund-raising school for its participation in a nationwide poetry reading event.
St Bernard's RC Primary School, Ladybridge, took part in Words Worth Reading, an attempt to break the world record for the biggest poetry reading, organised by Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Wordsworth Trust.
More than 250,000 schoolchildren took part by simultaneously reciting Wordsworth's famous Daffodils poem to smash the record for the largest mass reading aloud. The event raised money for Marie Curie Cancer Care's 2004 Daffodil Campaign.
St Bernard's School, which raised £170 and was one of the top 50 fund-raising schools, is to receive £100 worth of book tokens in recognition of its effort.
Stephen Tongue, local Marie Curie Cancer Care community fundraiser said: "Thank you to everyone involved for making the day such a success. The funds raised will help support the Marie Curie Nurses working in our community to give more people the choice to die at home."
