SAM Allardyce made clear his biggest wish when he said: "I need three or four more players I can hang my hat on. I need three or four more Gary Speeds."
The manager believes that 34-year-old Speed, signed from Newcastle last week, shows the kind of spirit, versatility and talent he is looking for as he seeks a back-up goalkeeper, a defender, a midfielder and a striker to bolster his squad.
Allardyce is also looking for inspiration and goals from Speed, who is likely to play in a more advanced midfield role for Wanderers than he did at Newcastle.
Speed said: "Ivan Campo plays the holding role in front of the back four that I played at Newcastle. I didn't get as many chances to get forward there as I did in my Leeds and Everton days, but now I hope I can score a few goals for Bolton."
