THE ninth qualifying round of the prestigious Jameson/Golf World Champion of Champions took place this week at Southport & Ainsdale golf course when Sean Doherty from Bury Golf Club won with a score of 69.
Jameson Whiskey, the Irish whiskey brand, is in its fourth year as the main sponsor of this acclaimed event and is supported by market leading brands Titleist, FootJoy, PowaKaddy and Lyle & Scott.
The Champion of Champions is the leading amateur event for club champion golfers and consists of 12 regional qualifiers covering five regions of the UK and the top five players from each stage will go through to the two-day final at Woodhall Spa starting on August 31.
More than 800 club champions will compete for the 60 final places and earn the right to do battle against the elite of club golf.
Doherty, who has a two handicap said: "We were really lucky with the weather and the sunshine produced ideal scoring conditions. I struck the ball well all day but my round really got going after an eagle at the par 5 ninth."
Karl Blackwell, from Runcorn, came second, with a round of 69 after a count back to qualify, along with Neil Andrew, 70 (Northenden), Daniel Belch, 71 (Pennington) and Craig Vance, 71 (West Derby).
