A BOLTON MP has today pledged his support to the growing Mobilise campaign to end unjust age discrimination for disabled people aged 65 and over.
Dr Brian Iddon is one of more than 150 MPs who have so far signed a House of Commons Motion calling for an end to this injustice and has already written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions about this matter.
Dr Iddon said: "I am delighted to add my support to this campaign. I believe people should receive help on the basis of need, not on the basis of age. Together I hope we can help bring to an end the outdated idea that elderly people are passive, non-contributing members of our society.
"The Mobilise campaign estimates that up to 2,000 disabled pensioners in Bolton are being denied the help they need to remain mobile and would benefit from this unfair age bar being scrapped."
Commenting on the Mobilise campaign, Richard Wilson, of Help the Aged, said: "We are delighted to have Dr Iddon's backing. For too long older, disabled people have been held back by ageist assumptions. We are calling on the Government to give them access to the benefits they need to remain active citizens in later life."
