From the Evening News, August 9, 1904: MINNIE Swaine, a well-known character, was charged at Wigan on Saturday with loitering and sentenced to one month's imprisonment.

She asked the Magistrates if they could not make it three months as she wanted to be sent away from her husband, who would not leave her alone. The Chief Constable: "You should leave him altogether."

FOUR young women from Little Hulton, Ellen Dawson, Clara Edge, Dinah Bate and Charlotte Eckersley, were charged before the County Magistrates this morning with stealing coal. PC Stamper spoke to seeing defendants picking coal at Charlton Sidings, Little Hulton, on Saturday, July 23. He caught Dawson and the others ran away. Prosecutor said the women had stolen about 300lbs of slack, valued at 1s 6d. He did not want the charge to be pressed, but the offence must not be repeated. They were ordered to pay costs.

THE Nag's Head Hotel at Enfield was taken possession of last week by a swarm of bees. The manager and the barmaids fought two days to keep them away from the barrels of stout, then they disappeared.

From the Evening News, August 9, 1954: MR Richard Eatock, who is 73, completed 60 years in the Derby Street mill of James Kenyon and Son Ltd, woollen manufacturers, Bury, at the weekend - but he was back at work as usual today. "I like my job and I do not want to give it up yet," he said.

A PIONEER of the local motor trade and a close friend of Lord Austin, Mr Herbert Southern, Blackburn Road, Bolton, died suddenly today. Mr Southern, who was 70, was the Bolton agent for Austin vehicles for 42 years and had many interesting memories and recollections of the days when cars were in their infancy. The company, Southern Brothers, St George's Road, built the Palladium Cinema in 1920 - it was originally intended to be a garage.

From the Evening News, August 9, 1979: SKATING fanatic Jim Murray wants Bolton Council to get its skates on and do something about providing an ice rink in the town. Mr Murray, President of Bolton's Ice Skating Club, feels that enough people are interested in skating to justify spending the millions of pounds needed for such a venture.

From the Evening News, August 9, 1994: SUNDAY afternoon stock car racing has been suspended at Bolton greyhound stadium. Management at the Manchester Road track have cancelled their contract with Trackstar North West after poor attendances.

A BOLTON group set up to help stop men carrying out domestic violence is on the verge of folding through lack of cash. MOVE - Men Overcoming Violence - does not receive official funding and founder Mr Jim Wilson says it is in danger of closing.
