A PARK in Bolton which used to be a haven for prostitutes and drug dealers has been transformed into a peaceful oasis.

Bridgeman Park in Bradford Street, the Haulgh, has been cleaned up and wrought iron fencing installed, and is now a tranquil spot for the whole community.

It was officially re-opened by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Prentice Howarth, during a fun day on Saturday. More than 100 people enjoyed activities including face painting, henna art, calligraphy, a barbecue, a bouncy castle and the chance to have a go in a boxing ring.

The improvement work has been carried out by Bolton Council, Bolton at Home, the Haulgh Community Partnership and the police. It forms part of the regeneration of the Haulgh area which used to be blighted by prostitutes, pimps and drug dealers.

Cllr Howarth, who used to be a local councillor before boundary changes earlier this year, said: "I know the people and the problems they have had. Everyone will benefit from these improvements. There is a nursing home, a nursery and a teacher training facility nearby which can all make use of the park. It is a real oasis."

Madeline Scott, of the Haulgh Community Partnership, said: "We are thrilled with the result - it is something the whole community can use."
