AFTER Turton historian Jim Francis asked for the names of Hamer Brewery pubs, in this column on February 17, I received a letter from a Little Lever reader, saying that the Rose and Crown, in Cross Street, "the original 'Bolton's Settle's Brewery' was bought by Hamer's Brewery but then, like the rest of Hamer's pubs, in 1951 it went to Dutton's Brewery."
I have now received a further letter, from Mrs Anne Edwards, formerly Anne Settle, who tells me that she is the daughter of William Settle, the head brewer 1930-51, and co-owner 1949-51 following the death of his father W.T. Settle.
"I know that all seven of our pubs were sold to Dutton's in 1951," she says. In other words, Mrs Edwards says that it was never a Hamer's pub.
