THIS picture of Bolling's Yard was taken in 1965. The paper reported: "The cotton-spinning and corn-milling saga of Bolling's Yard, the Bradshawgate backwater which has been a part of Bolton's industrial and agricultural life since 1787, has ended with the retirement of Mr Robert Winder, owner of Robert Winder and Sons, Ltd.
"His Bolling's corn mill, mainly rebuilt after a fire in 1859, will now stand idle until someone finds a use for it or its site. Under the Shankland town-centre redevelopment scheme, it is earmarked as a likely place for a car park. The old crushing, cutting and mixing machinery will be sold or auctioned off, and the last job will be to find homes for half-a-dozen or so cats who protected the corn mill from invading rats. Only about a dozen employees are affected by the close-down, and most of them have been fixed up with other jobs."
