FOOTBALL teams battled it out at an annual tournament in memory of a popular lifeguard who died from cancer.
Friends and family of Peter Catterall, who died from Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 22, took to the football field to raise money for the Christie Hospital, Manchester, where Peter was treated.
The former Turton High School pupil, from Bromley Cross, spent four years being treated at the hospital.
Money raised from the game will go towards buying a pager system to allow patients to go home after treatment and be paged back into hospital if necessary.
Bromley Cross pub teams, the Spread Eagle Lads and Spread Eagle FC, took part in the event, at Eagley Sports Club, which was held for the first time three years ago.
A crowd watched the sponsored match, in which players had to raise a minimum amount of money to take part.
A raffle and auction followed, which included a signed Bolton Wanderers football shirt and football, and an autographed picture of Sir Alex Ferguson.
The day finished off with a bad-taste fancy dress contest at the Spread Eagle pub, in Hough Lane, Bromley Cross.
An actual Manchester United match ball and a week's holiday to Marbella also went under the hammer.
The first tournament, which Peter arranged and took part in, raised more than £3,000.
The total raised so far from the annual events is £9,000.
