A 35-YEAR-OLD man is still being questioned after a sports car careered out of control and ploughed into two Farnworth schoolgirls.

Carla Bate was killed and her friend Leanne Keegan is fighting for her life after the accident on Sunday night.

A Toyota MR2 was being driven along Albert Road towards Longcauseway, Farnworth, when it collided with a parked car.

It spun round and ploughed into traffic lights where the two 13-year-old girls were standing, waiting to cross the road.

Carla, of Primrose Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene and Leanne, of Aster Avenue, suffered serious head and pelvic injuries.

She is still in a serious condition in the intensive care unit at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.

The driver was arrested shortly after the accident. Police applied to magistrates on Tuesday for more time to continue questioning him. They have until 6pm today to charge him or release him.

Two 14-year-old boys, who were also in the car at the time, were released after questioning on Monday night.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw the Toyota before the accident. Witnesses are asked to call 0161 856 5740 or 0161 872 5050.
