DETECTIVES investigating an armed robbery at a betting shop in Atherton have made a fresh appeal for witnesses to come forward.

They would like to speak to a number of people who were in the vicinity of Ladbroke's Racing Shop in Market Street when the raid occurred last Thursday.

Two masked men forced their way into the shop at around 8.40pm and threatened staff and customers with an axe and baseball bat.

They escaped with a quantity of cash in a V-reg silver Audi A4 which was driven by a third man. The vehicle, which was stolen, was abandoned on Cowper Avenue, Atherton, and the offenders fled on foot in the direction of Wordsworth Avenue, Atherton.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the gang before or after the robbery.

In particular, they are urging the occupants of a green car parked nearby to come forward. Any witnesses are asked to contact Leigh CID on 0161 856 7253 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
