From the Evening News, August 13, 1904:THE field day and sports day took place on Wednesday in connection with the Bolton Union Cottage homes, Fishpool Workhouse, on the commodious football and cricket field at the rear of the homes.
A racecourse and cricket pitch had been prepared, where a long programme was gone through. The Bradshaw Brass Band headed the procession of children round the cottages on to the field, where each child was provided with a bag of sweets and fruit. Thanks are tendered to the tradesmen and others who contributed to the prize fund and thus helped to add one more bright day to the lot of the hapless ones.
From the Evening News, August 13, 1954:BOLTON may have five-storey and seven-storey blocks of flats built near the town centre in the next few years, Ald H. Jones, Chairman of Bolton Housing Committee, said at the Committee's annual inspection yesterday. The sites sub-committee is to suggest at the Housing Committee's next meeting that they should build a block of five-storey flats in Crook Street and acquire property behind Crook Street for the eventual erection of a block of seven-storey flats. Ald Jones said: "There are a lot of people who like to live in close proximity to the town centre and we intend to give those people that facility."
THE practice used to be more general, although this atrocious summer has not altogether killed it off, of men wearing buttonholes. The passing of a most attractive custom was bemoaned again at the Bolton Parks Committee's annual inspection this week and, as a result, the Parks Department will endeavour to present the Mayor daily with a buttonhole and the Mayoress, as occasion warrants, with a posy.
From the Evening News, August 13, 1979:SOCCER star Alan Gowling helped to rescue two young children trapped by Morecambe's treacherous tides. The Bolton Wanderers striker was out bird-watching at Hest Bank with his wife Lynn when he spotted the panicking youngsters. Alan dashed to save one boy while an unknown man rescued the other.
ENGINEERING workers at a Bolton town centre firm today staged a sit-in at the factory, locking out directors and senior staff. The occupation of Hick Hargreaves was the most overt action in the Bolton area in the second one-day national stoppage in the engineering industry. Shop floor engineering workers said they were taking their action because of the attitude of technical employees at the firm during last Monday's one-day strike.
From the Evening News, August 13, 1994:TOP council figures went to congratulate green-fingered residents on a Bolton estate - and one fell victim to thieves. Hub caps were stolen from the car minutes after a council official parked up to judge a gardening competition on the Hall i' th' Wood estate. One resident said: "The majority of people are decent and honest, but the actions of this mindless minority spoil it for everyone."
NEW laser technology will mean a massive improvement in eye care in the Bolton area. Health bosses are planning to replace the existing Argon laser on the ophthalmology unit at Bolton General with new equipment. The present laser, which has started failing, was bought 10 years ago using money raised during the Centenary Appeal at Bolton Royal Infirmary.
