A MEMORIAL bench dedicated to a former member of a bowling club in Radcliffe has been stolen.
Family and friends of Ronald James Barlow have been left devastated by the theft of the seat from Hollinhurst Bowling Club, off Stand Lane, Chapelfield.
Hanging baskets and their fittings were also been taken during the theft.
Mr Barlow, of Chapelfield, Radcliffe, died from aneurism in January at the age of 66.
Instead of flowers, his family and friends donated money towards the cost of a bench in his name.
The natural pine seat which carried a plaque saying "In loving memory of Ron" had only been at the club for six weeks before it was stolen.
Mr Barlow's daughter, Linda Shaw, aged 38, of Withins Street, Radcliffe, said: "We are devastated.
"It beggars belief that anyone would steal a memorial bench. You don't steal grave stones and put them in your garden, so what is the difference?
"The bench was bought by all his family and friends."
Club member Mary Greenhalgh, of Oak Street, Chapelfield, said: "We were shocked and annoyed.
"Ron was the captain of our veterans team and very popular. This was a nice way for everyone at the club to remember him.
"It is dreadful when you can't buy anything nice for your own bowling club."
A police spokesman said an investigation is under way.
