THE Bolton League championship chase took another turn on Sunday when Westhoughton regained top spot after leaders Walkden suffered a shock defeat at Tonge.
After Saturday's long-awaited showdown between the top two clubs was called off because of a waterlogged pitch, Westhoughton beat Farnworth by 21 runs on Sunday, while Walkden were losing to Tonge by 11 runs.
On Saturday Greenmount closed the gap on the leaders after their seven wickets rout of Farnworth. Nishit Shetty top scored with 64 as they overhauled Farnworth's 130-8.
Tyrone Knight, who was the professional for Farnworth back in 1983, made a surprise apperance in that role again, after Chris Street pulled out with a side strain. The Barbadian, who is in his fifties, is over here on holiday.
Tonge professional Adil Nisar rewrote the record books when he scored 221 not out against Astley Bridge, the highest individual total for a batsmen in the Bolton League, overhauling his Pakistani countryman Parvez Mir, who set the previous record of 219, playing for Walkden against Kearsley in 1985. Despite his efforts the game ended in a draw after the game was affected by rain.
