VISITORS will be transported back to the age of steam when they visit Bolton Steam Museum's bi-monthly open days.

Adults and children can take in the history of Lancashire in the form of 25 rebuilt steam engines which were used to power the region's textile industry.

Driven by electric power for the two days, the machines have been restored by the museum's volunteers during the past 12 years.

They will help to illustrate the very foundations of Bolton's textile history, and how the region became one of the UK's industrial capitals.

The museum, originally opened in 1966, is now located behind Atlas Mill, in Chorley Old Road, Heaton.

Admission to the open days, on August 29 and 30, is free.
