THE daughter of lifelong Horwich bell ringer Fred Brownlow has organised a fundraising treasure hunt to help save the church bells.

Ruth Warburton, aged 59, is determined to help raise money to restore the town's only pealing bells in honour of her late father who rang them for 71 years.

Mr Brownlow was taught the skill by his grandfather, who was taught by his uncle.

At 173-years-old, the bells have rung out across Horwich since 1831, marking many occasions both locally and nationally. Now, £40,000 needs to be raised to restore them to working order.

Retired primary school teacher Mrs Warburton, who has recently moved back to Horwich, said: "The bells were my father's life. My mother always used to say they came first, then her. The bells are very important to me and have been in my family since 1841." The treasure hunt starts from the Church Street church at 3pm on Sunday, August 29.
