TRAFFIC bosses are putting the brakes on motorists to cut the number of children injured on roads.

A calming scheme could be introduced on eight roads in Farnworth using humps and 20mph speed limits.

Town hall chiefs have identified the Church Road area, including Market Street, Higher Market Street, Bolton Road, James Street, Clammerclough Road, Bridge Street and Trafford Street for the measures.

Leaflets have been pushed through the letterboxes of residents asking for opinions.

Residents say they are growing increasingly worried about the safety of pedestrians.

Carla Bate, aged 13, was killed earlier this month when a sports car ploughed on to the pavement at the junction of Albert Road and Longcauseway.

Her friend Leanne Keegan, also 13, suffered serious head and pelvic injuries and is still in hospital.

Farnworth resident, Florence Fairhurst, whose two grandchildren were involved in an accident a few years ago, welcomed the project.

She said: "Anything that slows drivers down is a good idea. I go shopping on Market Street and it's a dangerous road.

"The safety of pedestrians, particularly young children and the elderly, is paramount."

The scheme is being funded by Bolton Council's Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative.

Farnworth councillor Noel Spencer said: "We've had a spate of accidents in that part of the town and something needs to be done.

"But this scheme needs the support of the local people and I would ask them to respond to these proposals."

Residents are worried that surrounding streets could be used as rat runs.

A council spokesman said: "All comments will be considered and modifications made to the scheme if necessary."

Carla Bate's funeral will be held on Friday -- and her parents have asked that mourners wear colourful clothes.

Hundreds of mourners are expected at the West Chapel of Overdale Crematorium for the service from 11.30am.

A 35-year-old man has since appeared in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving.

Steven Lewis, of Westland Avenue, Farnworth, is also charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to provide a breath specimen following the crash.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Bolton Crown Court.
