A MAN who may be a vital witness to a serious road accident in Farnworth in which a schoolgirl was killed has come forward following a police appeal.

Detectives released a CCTV photograph of the man they wanted to speak to on Tuesday. Police say he contacted them that evening and is now helping officers with their investigation.

Carla Bate, aged 13, from Primrose Avenue, Farnworth, was killed and her best friend Leanne Keegan, also 13, from Aster Avenue, was left critical after they were hit by a car at the junction of Albert Road and Longcauseway on Sunday, August 8.

A 35-year-old man was due to appear in court today accused of causing the death by dangerous driving.

Steven Lewis, of Westland Avenue, Farnworth, is also charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to provide a breath specimen.

He was due before Bolton Crown Court.
