CLIMB Every Mountain - and they certainly did. Ten Chorley Harriers took on the Three Peaks Challenge in order to raise money for a Chorley charity appeal.
They started the ascent of Ben Nevis at 1pm on Saturday and completed this peak in just three hours. It was then a long drive by minibus to Scafell Pike in the Lake District, which they climbed in two and a half hours in darkness. The final leg took them to Snowdon. Here they set off up the Pig Track at 6.30am and were back at base camp at 9.03am.
They had hoped to complete the challenge in less than twenty hours but missed this by three minutes. All members were in praise of Dave Lee for his night navigation up Scafell.
They also sang the praises of Nicola Raby as she drove the van throughout the night then waited all alone as the lads ran up and down the mountains.
Anna Maria Crabtree who rewarded them with hot soup and sandwiches joined them at the end.
Afterwards club captain and organiser Chris Lane said, "This was a fantastic experience. We were delighted to complete well within the 24 hour deadline.
"However, we must thank Nicola for driving the van and getting us around safely. Most important is that we raised over £2,500 for the appeal."
A big thank you must also go to local running club Horwich RMI for the use of their club van.
In the meantime, Chorley Harrier's Alison Leonard experienced the "big time" by taking part in the AAA's championships held at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.
Competing in the U15's 800m, while she didn't make the final she was rewarded by being selected to run for Lancashire in the forthcoming Northern Inter Counties Championship to be held in Barnsley next week.
Keith Johnston had a terrific run in the last of the Haigh Hall five-mile series. He finished in second place just behind Belgrave Harrier Paul Feary.
The Harriers were rewarded with third team place thanks to support from Dave Wall, Chris Greenbank (first junior) and Paul Swindells. The ladies team took second place thanks to Diane Wall, Jeanette Murray (1st female junior) and Jacqueline Redmayne.
Paul Swindells took part in the last of the Sale Sizzler 5k series and finished in exactly the same time as the last race 18.46. Colin Heatherington was 20.48.
