THE first ever Westhoughton in Bloom competition has been declared a huge success by organisers.
Winners John and Joyce Steele, of Eatock Way, were commended for growing the best residential garden, the hardest fought category in the competition.
They were praised by judges for the high standard of maintenance of their lawns, colourful planting and interesting garden features.
Other winners included Spectacle Services Opticians, Marsden Street, who have created an outdoor waiting area at the rear of their shop.
Westhoughton High School won the schools competition.
Cllr Jim Gilfillan, chairman of the Westhoughton In Bloom commitee, said: "I am just glad I didn't have to judge.
"The standard of all the entries was really high.
"I am pleased that my committee and I have been able to start up the competition for Westhoughton and recognise all the hard work that these people put in to making our daily lives so much prettier."
