AN EDUCATION chief is hoping Bolton Institute's new university status will encourage more people to think about higher education this year.
Margaret Blenkinsop, director of education, wants to boost the expectations of youngsters, particularly within the 14-to-19 age group, about the opportunities available to them.
Mrs Blenkinsop said: "We are hoping having a university in the town will raise people's aspirations because it is so visible."
Speaking about what key issues lie ahead for Bolton's education service, Mrs Blenkinsop said schools would be talking to pupils as young as 14 about what they want to do when they turn 16.
Work will also be carried out in partnership with colleges and schools about raising awareness of sixth forms to youngsters.
And Mrs Blenkinsop is also asking parents to make sure their children are taught at home about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and healthy food.
Work is also being carried out within schools to raise awareness about healthy meals.
Bolton Institute is holding clearing days today and tomorrow from noon to 4pm at Eagle Mall, College Way.
