MORE police stations are closing, making communities vulnerable to more crime. Since Tony Blair became Prime Minister, no less than 227 police stations have been closed down.

This Government promised to get tough on crime and the causes of crime. He has certainly let us all down. Here was his chance to clean up a dirty mess left by a Tory government.

He should be ashamed that this country has got dirtier and dirtier. He has robbed us of our safety in our own homes, on our streets - which we were once proud to walk along - and on public transport. Is there anywhere we can go without being intimidated?

This August another five police stations will close. They are being replaced by unmanned control centres where crime victims must talk to officers via a video link.

The Home Office calls these closures a drive to "modernise" the police. That's shorthand for cost-cutting and selling off what it refers to as "inadequate and little utilised" premises.

Record amounts are being invested in policing, which begs one question: Where is the money going? Certainly not on what people want - that is local police stations and coppers on the beat.
