LANCASHIRE could not stop Glamorgan clinching the totesport League Division One title at Colwyn Bay as they were comfortably beaten by five wickets.

It means the Red Rose side will finish the season with nothing to show for their efforts but, on this performance, the Welsh side are worthy winners and Lancashire a distant second.

The Lancashire bowlers had no answer to Robert Croft, who steered his side to the verge of the title with 106 before he was bowled by Sajid Mahmood.

A partnership of 121 with Matthew Maynard saw them most of the way towards a target of 219.

Mike Watkinson said: "We didn't bowl well enough.

"Croft is strong through the off-side and we just fed him in that area. There was a bit more life in the pitch when Glamorgan bowled but all credit to them, they've had a great season in one-day cricket."

At least there was the boost of seeing Peter Martin return from injury with a good spell of bowling.

He grabbed two early wickets in only his second totesport League outing of the season and looks ready to play an important part in the Championship run-in.

Lancashire were always on the back foot after being reduced to 72 for four, although that was mainly through their poor batting.

Mark Chilton and Iain Sutcliffe followed last weeks record stand with loose shots and Carl Hooper drove a catch straight down long-offs throat.

Dinesh Mongia and Chris Schofield launched a recovery, adding 98 for the fifth wicket with sensible stroke play and good running. Mongia reached his half-century from 80 balls with a lofted drive over mid-on.

But they both fell to Croft looking to accelerate and despite Glen Chapple's 32 from 22 balls the total was well short on the small ground.
